Description
This hand batik mulberry silk stole showcases an intricate, contemporary design combining deep tones and fluid patterns.
The crisp white spirals are a testament to the artisan’s control over the tjanting—a traditional copper wax pen. The hot, liquid beeswax was freehanded onto the bare silk to block out the dye, resulting in organic variations in line weight that cannot be replicated by machinery.
The textile underwent successive cold-dye baths to build its tonal depth. The lighter cerulean and turquoise layers were applied first, followed by a second wax-blocking phase, and finished with a deep immersion into espresso brown and slate black dyes.
As the fabric was manipulated during the final dyeing stages, the hardened wax developed minuscule fractures. The dark dye seeped into these micro-fissures, leaving behind a subtle network of fine, web-like veins that serves as proof of authentic hand-crafted batik.
